ear pinchers, plugs, gauges?

i have had my ears pierced for like 6 months and distinguish i am considering getting very small gages. but i really don't recognize what the difference between pincher's and plugs are? i know that gages are nothing but the sizes, but i don't know what the size chart is?
Plugs are the bigger, rugged gauges that don't have a hole in them. Think of it like a checker piece from a checker directors. It's cylindrical in shape, and I think my first plug was a 00.
